A World of Her Own

During one of our vacations, we travelled to Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland.

It was a long journey. We travelled from Zurich to Interlaken and then continued to Lauterbrunnen, excited to see the valley we had heard so much about.

When we finally arrived, it was everything people had described.

Towering cliffs.

Green meadows.

Waterfalls flowing down the mountains.

Nature at its finest.

My wife and I stood there quietly, taking it all in.

Our five-year-old daughter had a different experience.

She was tired.

The long journey had exhausted her, and before long she started crying.

For a moment, we wondered if we should continue exploring or simply slow down.

We chose the second option.

Nearby was a small park. We sat on a bench and let her play while we rested.

Within minutes, she met another little girl.

No introductions.

No common language.

Just two children deciding to play together.

The tears disappeared almost instantly.

The tired little traveller was gone.

In her place was a cheerful five-year-old, laughing, running and completely lost in the joy of a new friendship.

As I watched them, a thought quietly crossed my mind.

We had travelled hundreds of kilometres to witness one of the most beautiful places on earth.

She had found her happiness in a small playground.

That afternoon reminded me that children carry their own little world wherever they go.

It isn’t built from famous places or breathtaking views.

It is built from play, curiosity, laughter, and the simple joy of finding a friend.

Perhaps that is something we gradually lose as we grow older.

We travel farther.

We search harder.

We make happiness more complicated than it needs to be.

That day, surrounded by one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, my daughter reminded me that sometimes a small playground is all it takes to feel completely at home.
